Day 17 – 3/27 – Dave hikes on and Michelle takes a break
I woke up this morning with very swollen and stiff knees. It’s been coming on for a few days. I have been here before, and don’t want to make the same mistake of muscling through. It just makes it worse. On the Great Divide I dealt with pain all the way through the two-month bike tour. This time I decided I need to take a break now and let my knees rest and calm down before I try continuing. Since Jeff was here, he and Dave hiked on and I took Jeff’s car forward to wait for them in Hanksville. It was a really cold day, but finally sunny and promising to warm up, so hopefully Dave and Jeff are having a great time out there.
I think I can get my knees ready to continue on but this route is really demanding, with lots of steep climbs and descents and scrambling around on boulders and pour-offs. It’s not just hiking.
It’s discouraging because I’ve done so much to prepare for this–for several months I’ve been hiking with weight in my pack, spent lots of time in the gym doing intense weight workouts a couple of times a week and lots of running/walking/hill climbing. There’s not much more I could have done to be ready. I just don’t have the best knees.

Hi Michelle,
I’m sorry your knees are giving you trouble. You’re doing the smart thing by giving them a rest now.
It sounds like you’re finding a lot of water out on the trail. That’s great!
I hope the knees get better soon so you can get back out there.
MIchelle, Sorry to hear about your knees. My knee and ankle gave out in canyonlands last year, But I was able to rejoin Ryan again on the trail after some time off. Dont give up, but be smart.
I am rooting for you guys.
Michelle, I’ve enjoying reading your trail updates from the field. I’m very sorry to hear about your knees. It must’ve been a tough decision to take time off from the trail. But like Ben said, it’s better to be smart about your health, than to needlessly push through. I hope the Henrys aren’t too snow-packed. We’re rooting for the both of you!
Dina – we have had plenty of water with only one dry camp so far. It’s great to have a route mapped out for us in this rugged country and we definitely appreciate all the work of the founders and trail notes of previous hikers. It’s an incredible route and I just don’t want to miss any more of it! So I hope this break works and my knees cooperate here on out.
Ben & Ryan – thanks for the encouragement, you guys know exactly what’s at stake for every day off the trail. Ryan, reading your blog made this route come to life beyond the book, and your trail notes continue to be the voice of reason. The route must have really affected you for you to be reading our account now, I’m honored that you’re both following along.
Michelle
