Review by Michelle Dodd, November 2007

Pros:

  • Best feature is the extra-burly cable from the sensor on the fork to the computer
  • Pretty simple and easy to set up
  • Survived a pretty good crash, endured several days of hard rain
  • Pretty inexpensive

Cons:

  • Doesn’t have any so far with one trip (Great Divide)

Recommendation:
A solid and sturdy computer for touring without any extra features or parts to worry about.

Review:
Dave reviewed his bike computer so I thought I should review mine. The Cateye Enduro 8 is another fairly simple computer with these features, all of which I used regularly except the 2nd trip distance:

  • Current speed
  • Maximum speed
  • Average speed
  • Total Distance (Odometer)
  • Trip distance
  • 2nd trip distance
  • Elapsed time
  • 12/24hr clock

Dave’s computer didn’t keep track of the average speed but mine did, which I liked to know just for comparing one day with another. There are so many factors in determining your average speed (road or trail surface, incline or decline grade, wind speed, what you ate for breakfast, etc.) that it doesn’t really matter all that much. I was just curious.

The best part about this computer is that it has an extra sturdy cable between the computer and the sensor down on the fork. It’s at least twice as thick as Dave’s and any other computer I’ve seen. In addition to the sturdy cable, I chose this computer because it was so cheap. Everyone says how computers are all doomed to fail, so I figured why spend a bunch of money?

The whole setup survived a pretty good crash (and several other tip-overs on the rougher areas of the trail) and still works just fine. It survived several days and nights of hard, cold rain as well. It will be on my bike for the Southeast Asia bike tour and we’ll see how it does with lots of rain and humidity.
